Staff/Consultants

Over the course of many years, Dr. Masi has identified important individuals in relevant areas, assembling a team noted for its efficiency and expertise.

 

Jay Avella, MBA, PH.D.JAY AVELLA, MBA, PhD

Dr. Jay Avella holds a BS in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY; a MA in International Affairs from Catholic University in Washington, DC; a MBA from Capella University (completed online); and the PhD, also from Catholic University in International Affairs.  In the private sector, he has held executive positions in manufacturing operations in both the food and computer integration industries.  After graduation from college, he was commissioned in the United States Navy where he served in both active and reserve assignments until his retirement in 1995.  More recently, he has been Chief Academic Officer at the American Military University and Chief Operating Officer at Capella University, before he returned to teaching, his real love.  He is a member of the adjunct faculties at Capella, the University of Phoenix, and Northcentral University.  Since 1995, he has served in different capacities as a staff member at MASI, with his most recent efforts directed at statistical analysis of EAP client satisfaction data.

Richard Csiernik, Ph.D.RICHARD CSIERNIK, PhD

Rick Csiernik BSc, BSW, MSW, PhD, RSW, Professor, School of Social Work, King’s University College at Western University in London, Ontario has written and edited eight books, including Wellness and Work: Employee Assistance Programming in Canada, authored over 125 peer reviewed articles and book chapters and has been an invited presenter to 200 national and international conferences, workshops and seminars. He has been on the King’s University College Honor Role of teaching twelve consecutive times and is past recipient of the McMaster University Instructor Appreciation award.

Jodi M. Jacobson, Ph.D.JODI M. JACOBSON, PhD

Dr. Jodi Jacobson is an associate professor at the University of Maryland, School of Social Work. She chairs the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) sub-specialization and the Financial Social Work Initiative. Dr. Jacobson earned her MSW and PhD degrees from the University of Maryland. Her research focuses on workplace health and well-being, including the relationship between physical and mental health, productivity and safety. She has conducted research on education and programmatic outcomes, in addition to studying EAPs, crisis intervention and suicide prevention programs, work/life programs, and financial capability programs. Dr. Jacobson has published in leading professional journals and presented at national conferences..

Robin MasiROBIN MASI, MFA, EdM

Robin is a Professor of Art Foundations with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She is also a Doctoral Fellow with the Center for Character and Social Responsibility and in attendance at the Boston University School of Education. She holds degrees from Tufts and Harvard universities.

Bernie McCannBernie McCann

Bernie McCann, PhD, CEAP ’s areas of expertise include organizational consultation, management and evaluation of workplace behavioral health program services, including Employee Assistance, Union/Member Assistance and workplace substance abuse prevention programs. His resume includes assignments and positions as Development Consultant for the Employee Assistance Research Foundation, Research Associate at the Brandeis/Harvard Center to Improve the Quality of Substance Abuse Treatment, Policy Analyst at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Member Assistance Program Specialist for the Laborers’ Health & Safety Fund of North America, and project manager or technical staff on various national workplace health, wellness and substance abuse programs. As a consultant, Bernie has assisted many work organizations, including Screening for Mental Health, e4 Health, Partners Healthcare, ValueOptions, Health Management Systems of America, numerous union health and welfare funds, occupational health departments and locals, small businesses, and non-profit organizations in developing, implementing and evaluating strategies for healthier workplaces. As an educator, he has designed educational curriculum and delivered workplace presentation to employees and union members and developed and provided leadership seminars and supervisory training for employer management and union leadership. He is a frequent presenter at professional development and research conferences for Employee Assistance, Union/Member Assistance staff and other practitioners. Examples include the US Post Office Management Training Academy, the Johns Hopkins University Faculty and Assistance Program, the George Meany Center for Labor Studies, Magellan Behavioral Health, the US Small Business Administration, the US Army Center for Substance Abuse Programs, the Employee Assistance Professionals Association and the Employee Assistance Society of North America. He is has guest lectured and taught university courses at Brandeis, Northeastern, Loyola & George Washington Universities. He is a published author, co-author of numerous journal articles and book chapters, and the book Context and Decision-making in Employee Assistance Programs. He has an earned PhD from Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management, a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University. Bernie is a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP) and a qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for US DOT-regulated workplace substance abuse programs. Bernie serves as Chair of the Curriculum Committee for the Employee Assistance Society of North America’s Annual Institute and as a member of the Advisory Committee for Neighborhood Health Plan in Boston, MA.

Todd Mook

Todd earned his bachelor's degree in political science from American University in Washington, DC in 1996. He worked for many years at the American Psychological Association as manager of the association's graduate student division. He is currently employed by Suffolk University in Boston. Todd has worked with Masi Research Consultants since 2009.
